ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Hawaiian Craftsmanship
A variety of decorative wood techniques were used to shape the wayfinding program. Curved and wave forms, sculpted wood posts, and carved wood patterns create a diverse, yet cohesive family of wayfinding elements.
A Language of Patterns
We created a language of project patterns that capture the essence of the rich heritage and local culture of Waikiki. These patterns were integrated into a variety of materials and surfaces throughout the architecture, common areas, and environmental graphics. A collection of botanical and traditional kapa-inspired patterns add character and texture into the project that is unique to International Market Place. The native banyon leaf and pikaki flower petals served as inspiration for the patterns incorporated into various metalwork elements including custom light fixtures, decorative screens, and railings. Additional patterns were derived from traditional kapa and textile patterning. These patterns were used to add depth and texture in architectural stone, wood carvings, glass canopies, and custom resin post toppers.
CELEBRATING THE Local Heritage
Visitors are greeted with a collection of educational and discovery moments that invite a connection to the past and present day Waikiki culture. The interpretive program includes   series of educational panels that enlighten visitors by celebrating the history, people, and cultural influences that have shaped Waikiki and International Market Place.
